[Powers] Jean is psionic in the broadest sense of the word. The mind is her domain. Jean's powers are on par with Xavier's, and possibly surpassing them as she has also honed telekinetic abilities, which Charles has not. Jean has fully developed her powers, which can be categorised into telepathic and telekinetic sub-groups.
Jean's telepathy enables her to take full control of another living being's mind. In it's mildest case, she is able to read thought patterns and inject her own mental voice (or thought persuasion) into another's mind. From there, she can alter perception (both physical and mental) and manipulate the body's functions at will. Example, she could quite literally stop a person's heart, switch their brain off, or cause them to wet themselves. Jean is also skilled in navigating the astral plane, and can take another person's mind there with her. In cases of an intense personal relationship, Jean is able to form a mental bond, in which her mind and the mind of the other person would be permanently open to each other. It would require death to sever this.
In regards to her telekinetic abilities, Jean has control of an object down to the molecular level, even so far as to stimulate heat in molecules - this is how she maintains her "fiery" aura when her powers are in use. She is able to levitate, propel and manipulate an object with detailed intricacy. lastly, she is able to generate concentrated, concussive blasts, and highly protective barriers.
As powerful an adversary as she might seem, Jean dislikes conflict immensely and will remain a defensive combatant in most situation, preferring to use her powers to protect her team-mates and other innocents. She also has a strict moral code she employs in regards to invading people's mental privacy, although it is not as rigid as Xavier's.
[Personality] The mind is closely linked to emotions, so it's no wonder Jean is a very sensitive, empathic person. She is the quintessential den mother - from the newest student to the closest of her team-mates, if you're loitering in the kitchen, she'll make you a sandwich. And coffee. And probably sit down with you and ask you how you're feeling. Do you need anything else? She has been a willing ear to and a shoulder to cry on to many of the mansion's past and present inhabitants, and continues to be the keeper of many a secret. She is a very easy person to talk to; experience has granted her the wisdom to know when to listen, and when to offer advice, which seldom fails to be helpful.
However, Jean's great compassion is also a negative trait, in some cases. While she will put herself squarely in the middle of any conflict her loved ones might be having, and insist upon a peaceful, reasonable settlement, she generally does everything she can to avoid conflict when it comes to her own problems. Jean will fret to no end over the slightest discontent of her companions, to the point of distraction. She would rather help others cope with their troubles than face her own. She is slow to accept the help of her friends, unwilling to stomach the idea of anyone being hurt on her behalf.
[History] Jean was born twenty-nine years ago, to Professor John Grey and his socialite wife, Elaine. She was their secondborn, the baby of the family. The Greys were very well off, living in a beautiful Annandale-on-Hudson home. Jean and her older sister Sara led comfortable lives until the time when Jean turned ten, and manifested her latent mutation --psionics--when her best friend, Annie Richardson, was struck by a car and died in Jean's arms. Jean's mind was connected to Annie's at that moment, and she very nearly died alongside her friend.
She did not die, however, she remained comatose until Professor Charles Xavier, a colleague of Jean's father, offered his assistance to the Grey's youngest daughter. Recognising her for a telepath, Xavier blocked out Jean's mutation until such a time as she was better equipped to deal with them. Upon her recovery, Jean became Xavier's first student, though not his first X-Man.
Years later, when the X-Men had formed, and Jean was in better control of her powers, she made the decision to join her mentor's team and became known as Marvel Girl. During a mission into space, Jean sacrificed herself to pilot an unprotected shuttle back to Earth, and seemingly died of the radiation when the shuttle crashed into Jamaica Bay. In reality, Jean had been inhabited by the Phoenix Force, from which she developed a far more sophisticated grip on her powers. She was found by the Avengers, and returned to life as an X-Man upon her recovery, taking the codename "Phoenix" in honour of the cosmic entity which saved her life.
Jean remained a dedicated member of the X-Men, until the events that took Cyclops away from them, and then returned him a changed man. Apocalypse's influence on her old friend pained Jean terribly, and it was enough to cause her to take a leave of absence from the X-Men.
Jean retired to life as a private citizen, spending much of her time with her family and occasionally working as model here and there, as she had done in her younger years. During a social function, Jean's was introduced to Andrew Montgomery, the son of New York's Senator William Montgomery. The two began dating, and were the subject of a rather high profile relationship.
That is, until Andrew and his father were invited to the presidential inaguration. Andrew, naturally, took Jean along and in hindsight... well, he's probably kicking himself for it. The X-Men were there to stop the president being assassinated, and upon realizing the situation, Jean was able to help out her former teammates, while her date had fled with the rest of the crowd, leaving her stranded.
That was as much a literal problem as it was a symbolic one for Jean, and she made the choice to return to Westchester with the departing X-Men. That very night, she resolved to stay. She'd been lying to herself about where her heart really was, and she'd been lying to her soon-to-be-fiancee about being a mutant. So she packed up herself, and her cat, and moved back to Westchester.
Her confrontation with Andrew was somewhat disasterous, but in the end, it was a simple realization - if he couldn't love her as she was, a woman with amutant gift, then he couldn't love her at all. They broke up the same night she rejoined the team.
Jean was finally home. She slipped back into the life of an X-Man easily, embracing the schedule of training and teaching, being amidst her family again. It was easy to see that this was where she loved to be. She also had the chance to catch upo with her friends, and Cyclops in particular, who seemed to have recovered some of himself after the merge with Apocalypse. It wasn't long before she felt the stirrings of something more than their friendship.
A complicated series of events saw Mystique impersonating the President in the White House, and the real Hatcher in the custody of the Brotherhood. If the X-Men couldn't rectify the situation, Mystique would use the position to start her war between mutants and humans - one the mutants would surely win. If the public found out, they'd be crucified.
The precarious nature of their sutation brought Jean to a realization - she had to tell Scott how she felt, or risk the chance of him never knowing if something happened to one of them. She told him, the night before they were to confront the Brotherhood, and discovered her feelings for him were mutual. Jean spent the night in his room.
It turned out to be a good thing she did tell him, because the next morning, as they opposed the Brotherhood, a psychic pulse took Jean out, and Hollowman ripped her open. She is currently in the medilab, recovering under Hank and Graces' care.
[Additional information] In order to avoid messy, complicating details, Jean has never and will never manifest the Dark Phoenix (unless you can give me one, really good reason why she should.) Also, she has never been romantically involved with Scott Summers. Until now.
[Disclaimer] Jean is not mine. She belongs to Marvel. I just play in their sandbox. Famke Janssen isn't mine, either. This is a fictional journal created for use in
Also, I found a few the icons I'm using for Jean (the first four, I believe) a LONG while ago, and I stupidly didn't make a note of who made them. If they're yours, PLEASE email me, and I WILL credit.
